Water Demand Management & Circularity in PMR

PROJECT LEAD: SOOMRIT CHATTOPADHYAY

The Jal-mulya project is focused on urban water demand management specifically focusing on consumer’s including domestic, commercial and industrial.

The project is focused on water usage behavior and gauges the willingness to pay for 24/7 good quality water supply. The project aims to promote sustainable and efficient water usage across the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) by employing a cost-price approach to strengthen water security.

Through collaboration among key institutions—including the Centre for Sustainable Development at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune Knowledge Cluster at SP Pune University (with guidance from the Scientific Advisor, PMO, GOI), Pune International Centre (PIC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)—the initiative seeks to develop policies and practices that encourage responsible water consumption.

Additionally, it garners support from well-wishers representing various companies, NGOs, community-based organizations, and dedicated individuals operating throughout Pune District.

This collective effort aims to create a resilient water framework, ensuring availability for current and future generations while addressing regional water challenges effectively.

This project’s ultimate goal is to come up with practical and implementable policies and/or guidelines to bring down water consumption and promote use of treated wastewater through rationalizing the costs and prices associated with supplied water.
